LED Light Therapy for Psoriasis

LED light therapy can be an effective, natural psoriasis treatment. It’s proven to reduce itchiness and inflammation effectively and help speed the skin’s healing process. In addition, LED light therapy is routinely found to be safe, natural and free of significant side effects, a big improvement over prescription drugs and invasive procedures.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition involving rapid skin cell turnover. As a result, people with psoriasis often find rough areas of painful irritation and scaley patches, most commonly on the trunk, knees, elbows, and scalp.

Although there is no cure for this autoimmune disease, treatments can help ease psoriasis symptoms, including home remedies, topical and oral medications, and light
therapy.

What is LED light therapy?

LED, or light-emitting diode therapy, is a skincare treatment that uses wavelengths of light, including red and blue.

NASA originally developed it for plant growth experiments on shuttle missions and later found it to have promise for wound treatment. Some aestheticians now use LED light therapy to help regenerate the skin from aging.

Is LED Light Therapy Safe?

There are three main types of phototherapy used in the treatment of psoriasis: broadband ultraviolet B (BB-UVB), ultraviolet B (narrowband-UVB, NBUVB) therapy and a combination of psoralen with ultraviolet radiation type A (PUVA). Repeated and long-term light therapy can also increase the risk of skin cancer. However, unlike light therapy (phototherapy), LED light therapy using LED lamps (light-emitting diode) does not contain harmful UV rays. As a result, LED light therapy isn’t associated with any significant risks. However, you may still want to speak with your doctor if taking medications that increase your skin’s photosensitivity.

Which colour LED light?

Blue or red LED lights can be used to treat psoriasis. A study examining the effects of red light therapy versus blue light therapy for individuals with psoriasis found that both the red and blue light therapies were effective in treating psoriasis. The study found no significant difference in scaling and hardening of the skin. However, blue light therapy treated erythema or reddened skin more effectively.

What Products can be used with LED light?

White willow (Salix alba) The bark of the white willow contains salicylic acid, one of the most potent ingredients prescribed for the skin by conventional medicine. In addition, the white willow bark can exfoliate psoriasis plaques because of its keratolytic substance. Applying a topical serum, like dragon’s blood serum after treatment, may heal and offer protection against pathogens like viruses, fungi and bacteria.

There may not be a cure for psoriasis; however, you may be able to find relief from your symptoms if you use the right mix of treatments. LED is just another tool to add to your kit for finding relief.
